Choose your sunglasses according to your face type
The sun is getting stronger and stronger, making sunglasses the most necessary accessory these days. Especially when you live in a country like Cyprus, where the sun is overhead for at least 8 months, it makes perfect sense that they should always be somewhere between your face, your bag and your car.
Due to these conditions, most of us have at least two pairs of sunglasses, one for our daily lives and one for the beach. Of course, there are those – especially women – who have more than two pairs that they can combine as appropriately as possible with their appearance.
Yes, it is very important that sunglasses protect us from ultraviolet rays, but how they fit with our appearance is definitely something that excites us and ultimately concerns us a lot.
But how can we find the ideal, stylish glasses that will give our appearance the character that suits us?
So it all starts with our face, whether it is oval, round, square, triangular, or heart-shaped. Knowing which of these categories you belong to will allow you to choose the corresponding glasses. Start with this and we will also give you some tips so that you can achieve the maximum possible result!
The oval face is also the most common face type, hence the great freedom that people with oval faces have in choosing designs and shapes when it comes to their glasses. The face is longer than it is wide with soft curves and equal features. The chin is narrower than the forehead. A large frame will definitely emphasize their cheekbones, but at the same time they can also resort to bolder choices such as cat-eye glasses for women and aviators for men.

In the round face, angles are completely absent, even from points such as the cheekbones or the jaw. To soften this roundness, we can help with sunglasses in geometric shapes and with sharp angles that make your face look longer and thinner. Square or rectangular sunglasses are ideal in this case, as are frames with an asymmetrical top or bottom, so as to break up the structure of the face, as long as they have edges with sharp angles. As for the size of the lenses, we make sure that the lenses are wider than they are tall, so as to balance the roundness of the face.

A square face is treated with the opposite approach to the round one. Faces with a strong chin, sharp edges with a wide forehead and equally wide cheekbones. All of these angles we want to soften to give the impression of a longer face. For men, we prefer sunglasses with slightly rounded corners and narrow lenses while for women, oval-shaped sunglasses can help an angular face look rounder and sweeter. Also, to balance out a strong jaw, we prefer sunglasses with a thin, wire frame.

The triangular face is one that is thin at the level of the eyes and jaw, but with accentuated cheeks and cheekbones. Certainly a not very common face type that we aim to minimize its width and soften its strong cheekbones while emphasizing the eyes. To achieve this, we resort to frames that present curvature, especially at the bottom and have soft colors. The most ideal choices are aviator glasses, rimless glasses and for women, cat eye glasses with transparent lenses.

The heart-shaped face is quite similar to the oval, with a wider forehead that tapers to the jaw. The goal for this face shape is to add width to the jaw and tone down the width of the forehead. To achieve this, glasses with a pronounced outer lower angle are ideal, although the truth is that most sunglass frames suit heart-shaped faces. Rimless glasses are particularly flattering, as are sunglasses whose upper part is wider than the lower part, such as aviators. Sunglasses with a pronounced arch (like the arch of the eyebrows) are also a very good choice for heart-shaped faces.
The vision specialist’s tips:
- The size of sunglasses should generally follow our physique, e.g. most of the time, bulky, overly wide sunglasses do not suit people with petite silhouettes.
- Our skin tone is another factor in choosing the ideal glasses, as well as the specific features of our face. You can recognize this after experimenting with different frame colors or even different lens colors.
- Another factor that we must take into account is the style of our hair. Curly or straight, short or long, hair affects the shape of our face, and therefore the shape of the glasses that flatters us the most.
- The sunglasses that we choose should fit comfortably on our face, without pressing on our ears and nose, and they should not allow light to pass through the top of them.
- Never forget that in addition to aesthetic criteria, we must also be sure that the sunglasses we choose have quality lenses that will effectively protect our eyes.
